Hello world!

Hi! I’m Christopher Munz-Michielin and this is my blog. I am (at the time of this writing) a 28-year old technology enthusiast, Ham radio nerd, budding Urban Explorer, and lifelong resident of Victoria, BC, Canada. I’ve created this blog to share and chronicle some of adventures and experiences.

It’s 2019… Why Start a Blog?

In the modern world of social media, 140 character messages and ever shrinking attention spans; writing a blog, complete with punctuation and proofreading, would appear to be a foolish idea, if not a complete waste of time. After all, who wants to read one blog entry when they could scroll though two thousand Facebook posts in the same amount of time? The answer is me, and others like me.

Being born in the early ’90’s I have the unique experience of being young enough to have spent most of my life connected to the Internet, yet old enough to very clearly remember life before social media. Growing up I spent a lot of time learning about computers, and, once my household got connected, the Internet. The early 2000’s were a magical time to be a young Internet enthusiast; the barrier of entry to become a creator was high enough to keep a lot of low-quality content out, but low enough to ensure that someone truly passionate about their topic could. Blogs and Forums reigned supreme, YouTube was filled with content created by people not just in it for the money, and one could spend hours reading, watching and learning about all kinds of interesting topics. This magical time, from about 2003 to maybe 2009 will always hold a special place in my memory, and creating this blog feels sort of like paying homage to a simpler, arguably better Internet-era.

Another reason for starting this blog is to satisfy my desire to publish more of my adventures, however, modern Social Media never seemed like the correct fit. When most people sign into their Facebook, Twitter or Instagram accounts they’re expecting an easy read and quick gratification; an old school blog lends itself to a more sophisticated experience. If logging onto Twitter is like glancing through a tabloid magazine at the supermarket, a blog is more like curling up with a good book and a warm cup of coffee. I want my stories to be in the ‘good book’ category.

So what are you going to write about?

Good question! In a word, everything. As I alluded to in the introduction, I’ve started to get more interested in Urban Exploration; drains, abandoned buildings and ‘off limits’ areas have all captured my imagination in recent months and I needed a platform to publish some of these adventures. However, while my UE adventures were the initial diver for starting this blog, I won’t commit myself to exclusively writing about them; there’s a lot of really cool stuff I’m passionate about and you can expect a technology-focused post to slip in from time to time as well!

Well, that’s enough of an introduction. Hopefully my reminiscing and nostalgia hasn’t completely turned you off the rest of the blog and you’ll read on! Feel free to reach out in the comments too, I’m always interested to find out who is reading my stuff.
